Dear Editor:
Four years ago, I unexpectedly found myself in the role of single mother. I determined that the best thing I could do was return to college and finish my degree. I chose UAF because of the programs offered, on-campus family housing, and most importantly because of Bunnell House, the on-campus daycare/lab school.
I am currently a senior majoring in biological sciences. Living hundreds of miles away from my hometown and raising two kids on my own while attending school full-time have made the last three years some of the most challenging of my life. I credit my success to hard work and sacrifice. However, I also owe a huge debt of gratitude to Bunnell House. Without access to convenient, quality daycare, it would have been nearly impossible for me to return to college. I felt secure knowing that my young daughter was in the most capable hands and never more than a few minutes’ walk away. I can’t express what a positive impact Bunnell House has had on our lives.
Beginning in June 2008 Bunnell House is scheduled for closure during the summer months. This closure would negatively affect many UAF faculty members and students, as well as the employees at Bunnell House. Behind the scenes, Bunnell House is hugely responsible for the academic success of many non-traditional students like me, as well as the students of faculty members whose children are in the program. Petitions in support of summer funding are circulating and I encourage everyone to sign them and get involved. UAF’s mission is to “promote academic excellence, student success and lifelong learning.” Any closure of Bunnell House would be detrimental to these goals.
