Nanooks headed for nationals
For the second straight year, the Nanooks are sending six skiers to the NCAA championships next month in Bozeman, Mont.
Marius Korthauer, Vahur Teppan and Ray Sabo will represent the men, and Aurelia Korthauer, Anna Coulter and Elisabeth Habermann will represent the women.
Rifle defeats UTEP in NCAA qualifier
The UAF rifle team defeated the University of Texas El Paso this weekend with a score of 4,669 to 4,539. Freshman Cody Rutter led the match in both the air-rifle (596) and smallbore (585).
Swimmers break records at PCSC meet
The Alaska swim team took to the Pacific Coast conference championships this weekend. Many swimmers hit career or lifetime bests in the meet. Junior Sam Zinsli hit two NCAA “B” cut times, in the 500 freestyle and 200 freestyle.
Jacqueline vanDriessche became the first Nanook to earn All-Conference honors by taking eighth in the 100 backstroke.
Men lose to Washington teams
The men’s basketball team lost two contests this weekend. On Thursday, the Nanooks were blown out 108-71 at Western Washington. Mladen Begojevic led Alaska with 19 points. Keven Campbell had 15 points and freshman Travis Pew had a career-high 14.
On Saturday, the Nanooks played much closer with the Central Washington Wildcats in a 82-71 loss. Kevin Atkins led the Nanooks with 14 points, Mladen Begojevic and Keven Campbell had 12 each. Colin Matteson and freshman newcomer Nashorn Maynard each added 10 points.
Women lose close contests
The Nanook women’s basketball team suffered two close losses this weekend.
At Saint Martin’s on Thursday, the Nanooks lost 65-59. Sheena Brown had 23 points for the Nanooks. Seniors Joscelyn Shumate and Kari Reabold had 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Saturday Alaska battled Western Oregon to a 78-72 loss. Sheena Brown again led the Nanooks with 22 points. Cristina Bruketta had 14 points and Shumate again had 13 points.
