Q: What causes hemorrhoids?
A: One of the main causes is straining when you’re trying to have a bowel movement. This may happen if you’re constipated or if you sit on the toilet too long. To prevent constipation you can:
• Include more fiber in your diet. Fresh fruits, leafy green vegetables and whole-grain breads and cereals are good sources of fiber.
• Drink at least 1to 2 quarts of fluids a day (not including alcohol).
• Exercise regularly.
• Avoid laxatives except bulk forming ones such as Metamucil.
• When you feel the urge to have a bowel movement, don’t wait too long to use the bathroom.

Q: My hemorrhoid is causing me a lot of pain and embarrassing itching. What can I do?
• Take warm shallow baths or soaks 3 to 4 times a day.
• Keep the area clean by gently patting with moist toilet paper or baby wipes.
• Refrain from sitting or standing for long periods of time. You can purchase a certain type of seat cushion with an open middle called a donut.
• Nupercainal or Anusol ointment purchased over the counter may provide some relief from the itching.
• Over the counter Anusol suppository can also help. It can be inserted into the rectum up to 6 times a day.
• Tucks or witch hazel in the form of pads or gel can also be purchased over the counter. Some people keep these in the refrigerator to provide added relief.
• A hydrocortisone cream may be applied to the area 2 to 4 times a day for anal itching.
